- Business As Usual As RIAA Targets ESU in P2P Lawsuit Campaign
The Recording Industry Association has reportedly sent 60 cease and desist letters to East Stroudsburg University. With the movement to legalize campus file-sharing with a blank tax, youd think that the campus lawsuit campaign would be winding down. That appears to not be the case according to Pocono Record, a news site in Pennsylvania. The report says school officials confirmed that 60 notices of copyright infringement have been received. More from the report: "So far, the school has had to issue roughly 60 warnings to students this semester," said Bob DAversa, head of ESUs academic computing department.

Following on from this bad experience, Ubisoft has just released the PC version of Prince of Persia without DRM, but expect piracy to be high.

Ever wanted to post something online anonymously for all to see? Tor2Web might be an application for you. Wireds Threat Level has made an interesting find today - Tor2Web. The concept comes from the anonymizing concept of the Tor network (AKA the Union Router) which anonymizes web surfers and prevents information about them from being recorded. More from the report: Aaron Swartz, one of the founders of Reddit, and Virgil Griffith, creator of WikiScanner have teamed up to provide users with a new service that gives them access to anonymized content posted through the Tor network. The article says that the concept of anonymously posting content through the TOR network has been on the back-burner for years, but recently brought back to life over the fact that Wikileaks, a website devoted to people who either want to publish suppressed information or want to access suppressed information (often reporters), was facing legal pressure to take content down.

Says that the current telecoms package would violate basic civil rights in Europe. The paper (PDF) explains in detail what the advocates are looking for. One of the first major demands is to strip out any provisions that would allow any form of a graduated response in response to the demands of, ultimately, major US corporations.

Releases new version of the once popular P2P program that allows users to selectively share files with family and friends. Limewire has just released an alpha version of LimeWire 5 and it delivers on its promise to bring "social sharing to the forefront" of the P2P world. Both the blessing and curse of P2P has always been the open nature of file-sharing. More people means more content is available, but it also means increased susceptibility to the maligned intentions of copyright holders, spammers, and data thieves alike. Private BitTorrent tracker sites and FTP servers are obvious solutions, but for many they remain out of reach or are simply beyond their technical expertise.
