  • Firefox 3, Norton Security Software Dont Mix Well
Poor Symantec. Last time we visited an issue like this, users upgrading to Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 were experiencing registry corruption due to Symantecs SymProtect feature preventing one of Microsofts fixccs.exe from deleting some entries. Now it appears that Symantecs security products have been having issues co-existing with Firefox 3. The issues have existed since Firefox 3 launched, but Mozillas recent decision to start alerting 2.0.x users to update to 3.0.1 gave the issue more publicity.

  • Comcast Appeals FCC Decision Ordering End to BitTorrent Throttling
Argues there are no "pre-existing legally enforceable standards or rules" governing what constitutes proper network traffic management and therefore shouldnt have to comply with the FCCs ruling. Comcast has formally filed an appeal with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit asking it to reverse a recent FCC ruling that ordered an end to "interference with connections of P2P applications." According to David Cohen, Comcasts executive VP, Comcast filed the appeal to protect its legal rights "and to challenge the basis on which the commission found that Comcast violated federal policy in the absence of pre-existing legally enforceable standards or rules." "We continue to recognize that the commission has jurisdiction over Internet service providers and may regulate them in appropriate circumstances and in accordance with appropriate procedures," continues Cohen in a statement. "However, we are compelled to appeal because we strongly believe that, in this particular case, the commission’s action was legally inappropriate and its findings were not justified by the record.

  • Metallica on Album Leak to BitTorrent: Happy Days
Drummer Lars Ulrich acknowledges that file-sharing is "part of how it is these days." Metallica has seemingly come a long way since back in 2000 when it led the charge against illegal file-sharing. It was their case against Napster that really made Metallica the face of file-sharing critics and really incensed a lot of their fans who couldnt understand how a band that had already made millions was concerned with making millions more. It became the poster boy for greedy artists everywhere and caused many to turn their backs on the band that had turned its on them. Things at Metallica Inc.

Not only is it good for the environment, it will save your company a whole lot of dough. Apparently it took awhile for HP to figure this out, but they are feeling much better now.

  • One of the RIAAs Law Firms Tries to Scare British P2P Users
Theres some more anti-p2p propaganda starting to circulate as news in Britain, but an investigation into the law firm reveals that there is a connection between the law firm and the RIAA. It seems to be the latest thing for the Recording Industry Association of America - hire different firms to pretend to be an unbiased source of information on the debates of p2p. While far from the first time this has happened, it seems as though it has been recently practiced in Britain. In a report posted on Silicon.com, John McKinlay of the law firm DLA Piper discusses some of the activities going on in Britain.

  • Warrantless Search and Seizures for Piracy Pushed by Irish Justice Minister
Should the Irish police be burdened with getting a warrant whenever there is a suspicion of piracy? According to Dermot Ahern, the Irish Justice minister, the answer appears to be "no" as he pushes for tougher anti-piracy laws. It may be a first in Europe. There is a new effort to combat piracy (it appears to be geared towards physical piracy) but what is being demanded may prove to be very controversial. All this is according to a fresh report off of the Irish Examiner. While there are relatively few who support physical piracy, theres also relatively few who would support circumventing the need to obtain a warrant whenever a crime is suspected to be taking place.

Service expected to go live in January 2009 and will allow visitors to stream content on-demand for free or purchase music tracks with pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll ads. For many inside the UK and out the BBC has some of the best music programming around (my personal favorite is Radio 1s Breezeblock). Unfortunately, up until now fans have had to rely on manually recorded shows which oftentimes arent exactly made with the highest of quality in mind. BBC Worldwide has decided to join the digital music revelation and make use of their ample section of music programming by allowing visitors to stream and download content. It will be free to stream audio and video music content while track downloads are rumored to start at around 79 pence ($1.
