Combine forces to help route file-sharing traffic to local peers and help avoid network congestion. BitTorrent Inc. and Oversi, an Israel-based pioneer of over-the-top (OTT) caching and delivery solutions, today announced their collaboration to deliver an integrated solution that optimizes P2P traffic across the Internet Service Provider (ISP) network. The joint solution brings clear benefits to ISPs: reduced bandwidth costs and deferred infrastructure investments together with a higher quality subscriber experience. The solution involves BitTorrents intelligent client protocols (Policy Discovery Protocols) communicating with Oversis NetEnhancer(TM) network intelligence platform to improve peer selection in line with the ISPs network capabilities while speeding up P2P downloads.

Says companies are allowed to put Digital Rights Management on their CDs, even if it doesnt work on some devices. It may be a small setback to advocates who want to broaden their rights when they copy a CD. According to 01net (Google Translated), a French court has ruled that if a company puts Digital Rights Management (DRM) on their CD and a consumer cant play it, the company did not break any laws and cannot be held liable for damages. Naturally, proponents for DRM applauded the decision (Google Translation) While many users of content may feel that copying is a right, the ruling seems to just reinforce what has been generally set in stone in many other countries, that, legally speaking, private copying is an exception, not a right. If a company chooses to put DRM on their CD, then they are entitled to do so.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy now says scheduled "live" trials will be "a closed network test and will not involve actual customers," making the results worthless since they wont indicate a real-world impact. With Australians scheduled to hold massive rallies throughout their country this Saturday, December 13th, to protest govt plans for mandatory Internet filters, its welcome news to learn that their widespread opposition may have finally forced Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, the one behind the plan, and others to take notice. For today its being reported that Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, has written to critics saying that the so-called "live" trials would be "a closed network test and will not involve actual customers." Considering that live trials were necessary to counter previous lab tests in which not only did the filters not block "inappropriate content" as desired , but whereby network speeds were diminished by up to a staggering 87%, the fact that live trials will no longer be conducted surely means that the govt is now backing away from the heavily criticized policy. Australian ISPs have inflicted blows of their own to the mandatory filtering proposals with Telstra and Internode now saying that they would not take part in the trials, iiNet previously offering to cooperate only to show just "how stupid it is," and Optus testing only a heavily scaled model.

Published : 2008-12-09 Source : www.zeropaid.com - Warner Music Proposes File-Sharing Tax for College Tuition
Royalty fees included in fees would mean students could legally share music, but would also penalize those who dont share music or live in on-campus housing. Warner Music Groups digital music strategist, Jim Griffin, is proposing a "voluntary blanket licensing for online access to music" scheme whereby students are taxed for the privilege of legalized file-sharing with the proceeds collected by a nonprofit, Choruss, and divvied up among copyright holders. The presentation is making the rounds of college campuses nationwide by nonprofit technology advocate Educause, with Columbia, Stanford, University of Chicago, University of Washington, MIT, University of Colorado, University of Michigan, Cornell, Penn State, University of California at Berkeley and University of Virginia all reportedly having expressed some interest. Its not surprising considering the recent passage of the Higher Education Act (HEA), which included provisions forcing colleges and universities to combat illegal file-sharing on campus, may eventually cost these institutions some $500,000 USD annually. Whats particularly unsettling about the proposal is that it forces all students, whether they live off campus or not, or even whether they share music or not, to pay an extra fee with their college tuition.

Formally presents legislation allowing copyright holders to use courts to force ISPs to divulge names associated with IP addresses linked to illegal downloading. The Swedish government says it is drafting a new anti-P2P law that will allow copyright holders to pursue those sharing music and movies illegally. The proposal, based on the European Unions Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Directive (IPRED), makes it possible for copyright holders to seek a court order to require ISPs to divulge the names of individuals accused of sharing copyrighted material illegally. Companies can then seek damages from the file-sharers in court. “If those who create computer games, films, or music lack the ability to be paid for their products, they won’t be able to hire the people they need so their companies can grow.
